8 Commands

being a disciple

First

Repent & Believe

“The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” (Mark 1:15)

Like the thief on the cross, have we repented and believed that Jesus was sent from God and died for our sins?

second

Be Baptized

Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’(Matthew 28:18-20)

In obedience, Have we publicly identified ourselves with the body of Christ? Being saved is like getting engaged(private) and baptism is like getting married(public).

third

Study the Bible

Jesus answered, ‘It is written: “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”’
(Matthew 4:4)

With the tornado of information that we are fed with each passing day unless we deliberately read our bibles everyday and soak it in we will be swept away. Its acts like a filter.

Fourth

Love

‘Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’
Jesus replied: ‘ “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: “Love your neighbour as yourself.”
(Matthew 22:36-39)

Love God and Love your (irritating) neighbor. Knowledge puffs up love builds up. Its much like the engine oil without which our relations will burn out due to friction.

Fifth

Take the Lord’s Supper

‘This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.’
(Luke 22:19)

We need to remember Lord’s death not only once a month but also everyday when we eat.

Sixth

Pray

‘And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. (Matthew 6:5)
Its like the breath of the christian life, we need to have fixed times everyday for personal prayer and also be praying before we do anything and thanking God after we complete anything.

Seventh

Give

Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.’ (Luke 6:38)

Are we diligently giving what we ought to give to the Lord on each rupee that we earn. Its a sign of maturity and obedience.

Eighth

Make Disciples

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
(Matthew 28:19)

Are we sharing the gospel everyday? If we are not actively propagating the gospel we are being an obstacle to it, there is no middle ground!

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
